Irodori - our new fav Jap buffet

Celebrated Fathers' Day at Irodori as Jie claims they serve pretty good Sashimi and she's probably right!

The spread we had
The Fams tend to go for buffets when it comes to ABC celebrations (i.e. Anniversary, Birthdays, any other annual Celebrations), as get together is only fun when we can stuff our face with food and yarn non stop. I generally prefer international buffet as thats the only chance where I get to spam desserts and ice creams. However, I had sudden cravings for sashimi and so I suggested having Jap for Fathers' Day. Our usual go to restaurant for Jap Buffet would be Kuru Kuru but since there was a groupon deal on Irodori and sis claims Irodori serves pretty good sashimi.

Extensive menu
Oh ya, don't get conned by Groupon as the deal was almost the same price as if you were to pay we OCBC card. Word of advice, do make reservation as the place was packed when we went. Service was incredibly slow too becos only 1 out of 8 staffs could do the ordering. I personally think thats part of their ploy in order to limit the amount of food people order *tsk tsk*

Although the service was incredibly slow and disappointing, the food pretty much made up for it. I love their signature roll- The Irodori Roll. It is essentially a maki stuffed with Lobster salad, coated with egg roe and slathered with mayo. I know it sounds so super unhealthy but I swear it damn good.

Every table had a complimentary dish of the day. Sissy said she had mini lobster during her previous visit. I guess we weren't as lucky, the complimentary dish that day were prawns covered with Mentaiko. The prawns were ok...nothing too special other than the fact that they were slathered with Mentaiko of course.

Highlight of the meal would have to be their sashimi. I'm no Sashimi connoisseur but I guess having spammed much raw fish in my 25 years on this earth I pretty much can tell a sucky sashmi from an average one. Having eaten at Ikoi and Kuru Kuru I would probably rate Irodori's sashmi "as good as Ikoi's" or even better. Kuru Kuru is automatically disqualified as they do not serve sword fish (which I absolutely love). The fish served at Irodori had the right thickness and were really succulent. I think our table had 5-6 portions of these.

I had these all to myself! Just look at how thick these were! It literally melts in your mouth.

Another great dish would be their Sir Fried Beef with ginger. The beef was tender and packed a punch of flavour.

Another dish which I loved was the seasoned egg plant. These were soooo good! The egg plants were slightly sweet yet had this nice charred taste to it. My only gripe would be it was slightly on the oily side.

The baked salmon fillet were pretty good as well. Crispy on the outside but super tender inside. Nothing irks me more than dried salmon.

Shishamo is a must have. Irodori has 2 versions of these babies: fried and grilled. Honestly, there weren't much difference as I found the grilled equally crispy. I guess I'm just partial towards anything that's not fried.

Besides those above, we also ordered tons of other stuff which were decent: edamame, takoyaki, Beef Handroll, Californian Handroll, Tempura, Grilled Mushrooms, Teppanyaki etc.

Happy Papa Day!

The 3 musketeers
Verdict (comparing Kuru Kuru and Ikoi)

Service: Incredibly bad. Kuru kuru had the best service out of the lot. Ikoi's service slightly better than Irodori albeit had a snob to them.

Food: Irodori had the best of both worlds- Extensive menu + Good sashimi. Ikoi had pretty limited items on their menu (dined there 5 years ago and might not be that up to date) but had really good sashmi. Kuru Kuru's menu is really extensive but doesn't serve sword fish. I also liked how Kuru Kuru had complimentary desserts after the meal.

Price: I guess Irodori wins when it comes to value for moeny! Ikoi was affordable but became slightly ex when they increased their prices. Kuru Kuru is still the cheapest of the lot but doesn't serve as good sashimi.

I've heard good reviews on Shin Minori, Shin Yuu and Senki but have yet to try them out. Do suggest other Jap buffets if you've been to any!
