First and foremost, don't expect top quality service. We expected really slow service and purposely went on a Monday night. Service on a Monday night was surprisingly prompt; in fact REALLY prompt. All our dishes were served within 10 minutes; all coming one after another.
Before I could say 开动! our table was filled with dishes and I couldn't afford to take a solo picture of each dish.
An Array of Dim Sum |
Ok, here's the lowdown...The noodles were ok, a cross between Maggi Mee and Wanton Mee. I thought the spicy dan dan noodles weren't spicy enough and the Zha Jiang noodles were just salty and had no flavour. If I were to rate Swee Choon's handmade noodles as 8/10 this is definitely a 3.
The Har Gow and Siew Mai were pretty decent. The Har Gow's skin was kinda thick but still edible when hot. The Siew Mai were not too bad, quite flavourful and packed with juicy meat. The Char Siew Pau was pretty good: fluffy skin and quite afew chunks of meat in the Pau. Only downside, Pau Skin to meat ratio was kinda low, would have prefer more sauce and meat to flour. Mum tried the chicken claw and said it wasn't that bad.
Now onto the ok-acceptable-but-wouldn't-order-on-hind-sight-dishes. The pan fried carrot cake were oily but wasn't the worst of the lot. I didn't quite like the sauce for the sweet & sour pork, thought they were a little too sweet. The Chicken Glutinous Rice wrapped in Lotus Leaves were pretty ok, tasty but a tad too oily.
The stars of the night would have to be their meat platter. The duck meat was tender and flavourful. Char Siew were a tad too salty nonetheless juicy and yummy. The roast pork wasn't too bad too.
Now on to the suckier items, the pan fried Chee Cheong Fun was incredibly oily and gross. It had no flavour, utterly plain and disgusting. Their brother from a different mother, the steamed Chee Cheong Fun, wasn't any better. The rice flour rolls were thick and really hard. If good CCF slides down your throat, these would cause you to choke and die within seconds.
The tofu in abalone sauce was terrible too. No abalone flavour what so ever! The tofu was uber plain and oily. The egg tarts were the worse egg tarts I ever had. The crust was soft and limp, custard was so so. But what's an egg tart with a sucky crust?!
The hot and sour soup was tasted like those sichuan instant soup which comes in a sachet and mixed with warm water. Yes the soup wasn't hot. The pan fried stuffed egg plants were really oily and didn't quite had any flavour, I was really surprised I ate the whole damn thing.
Worse dish of the night would have to be the polo bun. The Polo Bun wasn't hot, let alone crispy. It tasted uber floury and had no flavour what so ever. It was dense, heavy and I spat out the entire thing upon taking a bite... and I thought my cheese buns I made last Saturday was bad, this is worst!
In short: Everything sucks except the roast pork, duck and char siew. Dim Sum Buffet isn't worth it as there aren't many dishes to choose from. Including GST and Service Charge we paid roughly $23.30 per pax. With $116.50, I think we could have had better food at Swee Choon and still fill incredibly full. Hence, I would highly recommend not to waste your money on this deals.com/ groupon deal and just go ahead with some other neighbourhood dimsum joints. At least you would have to pay tax and service charge there! :)
On a brighter note, Happy Birthday Daddy (if you're bored and reading my blog). I wish you good health, extreme happiness and live a ripe old age!!
Daddy's 60th Birthday Cake |
I'm very proud of my decor, unfortunately I can't say the same taste-wise. The cake is rather dense and tasted more like those cakey brownie than a cake. On hind sight, I should have used a chocolate sponge cake recipe instead :( Recipe was adapted from here: http://addapinch.com/cooking/2013/01/25/the-best-chocolate-cake-recipe-ever/. It might have been due to the fact that I cut the recipe by half and baked it in 1 cake tin instead of 2. In any case, doubt I will be using this recipe again.
