Bonkers Binging @ Bangkok

I know I've neglected you guys, but get ready for some massive backlog blogging.. :)

Went Bangkok almost a month ago and I think we did nothing but eat , eat and EAT...

Budget airline bores the shit out of us
Straight after landing, we settled down at Ed's house and headed over to Terminal 21. Terminal 21 is a new shopping centre in Bangkok with a "travelling the world" in 1 day concept. I thought the layout's pretty cool but the shops were more boutique style and not as cheap nor spectacular.

London?? or Thailand??
After all the OOooo-ing and AHHhha-ing at Terminal 21, we headed over to Siam Centre, which is opposite Siam Paragon. We were searching high and low for this mango dessert shop which we chanced upon during our trip last year. After pure perseverance and 1 hr of roaming, we finally found Mango Tango! Unfortunately we had to rush off and only got a cup of Ice Blended Mango with Pudding. Verdict? it was sehr GUTTT :):):) should have bought more! =S

Met the Fams, Ed and Ed's Dad for dinner at Tawandang @ Rama 3 Road: the very first Tawandang, opened in 1999. I thought the food was pretty good but I guess the performance and entertainment was the highlight of the evening.

Day 2: Breakie was at The Witch Pie Factory. Ed's Dad swears by their quiche and pie. Their big breakfast looked kinda good and their quiche wasn't too bad but their the shepherd pie that jie had had a super tough pie crust; almost inedible.

After breakie, Ed brought Shuaxy to make his suit and I had my first Thai Coffee (definitely not my last), while waiting.

It's pretty cool how they tie the serviette over the cup

We spent the afternoon at Platinum followed by dinner along Chao Phraya River :)

The Fams + Ed and his dad
As it was pretty dark, I didn't manage to snap any shots of the food. After dinner, the ship took off and we had a slow, almost 2 hr cruise along the river.

The night was still young and Ed's Dad brought us to Thong Lo station for the best wanton mee and award winning Pad Thai. According to Dad, the wanton mee really is the best eva, unfortunately I couldn't say the same for the Pad Thai.

Best Wanton mee @ just outside Thong Lo Station

Mum saw Mango Sticky Rice across the road and bought 2 boxes of MSR for breakfast tmr- best decsion ever as it was delicious!

Day 3: We headed out really early for the floating market. Ed's dad rented a mini van and we all hopped in like little kids on a school excursion.

We arrived at the floating market at approx 9 am and began eating our way through the boat ride. I have no idea what this dish is called but it tasted really good. It's kinda sweet and salty, with tons of chay poh in it.

Sweet and Savory Dumplings
Ed's Dad bought a bowl of Kway Chap to share. Thank God it was to share as it was kinda oily and not so good tasting.

Thai Kway Chap
The floating market is kinda cool; they sell all sorts of things from paintings to picture taking with snakes. I think its the kinda the thing you should try, at least once in your life. :)

After floating market tour, we headed over to this famous local Seafood Restaurant. I think this is about the best seafood dishes we had during our entire Bangkok trip.

For those of you who know Thai

Do make a trip here, trust me you wont regret
I'm sorry I dont really know the name of the restaurant but I swear the food here is really good, and affordable as well!

Ed's dad is simply crazy over fried fish and boy was this huge
I think the best dish would have to be the black pepper crab meat; it's baically a huge serving of pure crab meat with a dash of spring onions (no shell nothing!). The crab meat's so fresh, its sweetness goes really well with the peppery condiments. The fried rice was pretty good too! Crab meat fried rice with tons of crab meat! YUMS, thinking of it makes me drool right now.

After brunch, we headed over to the Siamese twins statue. Both Chang and Eng, the Bunker Bros were the ones who became the basis of the term "Siam-ese Twins". They married sisters Adelaide Yates and Sarah Ann Yates and fathered 21 children in total; you can say their children can consider their first cousins, half siblings!

Then we spent about 3 hours looking for the fish farm, Ed's father was so enthu about.

The fish farm is basically a farm filled with hungry cat fishes. We had tea there and spent the evening feeding fishes.

Really devastatingly hungry cat fishes

Tea comprised of everything but tea. We had papaya salad, fish cake, cockles, fish cake, cheng teng and.... fried fish heh. I thought the papaya salad was really good, best of the lot.

Dinner came soon after and I wasn't the very least bit hungry. Nonetheless Ed's Dad brought us to his friend's pub, Champion's Restaurant and Sports Bar. It's a pretty chill bar with hot babes contest every last friday of the month.

Left Clockwise: Buger,  Mee Goreng, Tom Yam, Nasi Lemak
I think the best dish out of the lot would have to be Shuaxy's chicken set: comprising of Parma Ham Melon Appetizer, Baked Mussels, Roasted Chicken Breast and Panna Cotta.

Left Clockwise: Baked Mussels, Mushroom Pizza, Chicken Breast and Parma Ham Melon
Day 4: Chaktuchak Market!! I missed JJ market last trip and I was looking forward to a day's worth of shopping at JJ's. First thing on my itinerary was to get myself the famous coconut ice cream; trust me nothing beats cool refreshing Coconut Ice cream in that sweltering heat.

Coconut Ice Cream for 30 Baht
I think JJ kinda changed since 2007, the area seemed bigger, less congested  Merchandises were of better quality too!

After all that walking, I got myself a treat! Mango sticky rice FTW!

Mango Sticky Rice
Jie and I had lunch at the eating area; I ordered a plate of Pad Thai while Jie had a bowl of pork ball noodle. My Pad Thai wasn't as delicious as the one I had at Platinum and Jie's Pork noodle was far from delish.

Pad Thai

Pork Noodle
We had Singapore food for dinner. Ed's Dad said this place served the best Singapore Food in Bangkok.

I thought the carrot cake was pretty good but really sinful; every morsel of carrot cake was deep fried till golden crispy.

The hokkien mee was slightly different too as they used Bee Hoon instead of thick Bee Hoon.

The Laksa was slightly thicker than our Singaporean version; I quite liked the thick luscious gravy like broth though :P Laksa taste so much better with yellow mee too!

Singapore food was good but the highlight of the night would have to be cakes from Mousse and Meringues at Soi Sukhumvit 31, just opposite the Singapore Food place. The cakes cost about 6-7 SGD are slightly on the small side but... they are delicious! I got a Berry Berry Cheese Cake, Fudgy Chocolate and some Coffee Cake. All and I mean ALL of them tasted really damn good! If I had the luxury I would have gone back and gotten myself some more!

We then went for Thai Massage at somewhere near by and I thought it was pretty good (2nd night's better though)

The sexy boys
Supper at Thong Lo once more! Apparently the Wanton mee didn't taste as good this time round. I had a Mango Sticky Rice from another store (apparently more famous than the previous one). However, I prefer the former, somehow or rather.

Ed's Dad called a Oyster Omelette to share, it's from the same store which sells supposedly award winning Pad Thai. I thought Bedok's Oyster Omelette tasted better though.

Day 5: We woke up uber late and headed over to Ancient City. We had brunch at a restaurant pretty near Ancient city.

Brunch was interesting; loved the appetizer which comprised of crispy rice crackers and thick rich coconuty gravy.

Appetizer
The Crab Meat Fried Rice was pretty good too though not as good as Day 2's.

The soft shell crab was also pretty good, it was fried till crispy and drenched in coconut infused gravy.

We had a seafood broth which, in my opinion, was way too salty.

Ancient City
Ancient City is the gateway to Thailand's heritage, history and art. In other words, it's basically a garden/ park filled with miniature man-made temples/ statues and ancient relics of Thailand.

We didn't quite bother with the heritage and basically just had fun cam -whoring and goofying around.

What's important to note is that they serve one of the better tasting Pad Thai in Bangkok :) You find stuff at where you least expect to find, I guess that's life. In case you're really planning to search for this awesome Pad Thai, its near the floating market region of Ancient City.

Good Tasting Pad Thai
Dinner was at this Chinese restaurant, which apparently serves really good Shark's Fin and Peking Duck. Ed's Dad got all enthu and ordered close to 10 over dishes, we almost died X_X, not that the food wasn't tasty though :)

I love the Olive Rice! It was uber aromatic and really really tasty!

Left Clockwise: Kang Kong, Peking Duck, Fried Duck Meat, Kick Ass Olive Rice

The dish that stood out of this lot would definitely have to be the tofu pork soup, simple but really delectable.
Left Clockwise: Crab meat soup, Duck Web feet Noodles, Tofu Pork Soup and Broiled Chicken Soup
We also had dessert- Orh Ni, thai style. We simply couldn't stomach dessert and had to Da Bao for Breakfast tmr. The Thai Style Orh Ni was incredibly sweet, nonetheless interesting. I love how they added crunchy water chestnuts and sweet dates to the dish.

Thai Style Orh NI
We headed for massage after dinner (I think I almost puke my dinner). After massage  we headed over to Chinatown to get some tid bits for colleagues and friends. Dad, Jie and Ed's Dad had a bowl of Pig's Intestine Noodles, while Ed, Jo and myself roam the streets of Yaowarat. I grabbed a chocolate magnum from 7/11 (its damn cheap in thailand and you gotta gotta have one, at least one). Ed's dad da bao-ed siew mai for our breakie tmr, so sweet right?!

Siew Mai
We got him durians too! I've never seen anyone so excited and crazy over durians though lol.

Thai Durian

Day 6: We headed over to Platinum for last minute shopping and really chiong-ed the last hour. Ed's dad then sent us to the airport and we had our dinner at Black Canyon Coffee. Their signature black canyon coffee was diabetic-ally sweet; you'll be better off ordering a latte instead.

Their pad thai was mind blowing though! Now that's what I call an award winning Pad Thai.. I thought the Pad Thai was pretty affordable and was pretty tempted to da bao haha, what an awesome departure dinner.

Black Canyon Award Winning Pad Thai

Jie's green curry chicken was way too salty; besides the overpowering salt content, the dish was pretty decent.

Black Canyon's Green Curry Rice

I guess this Bangkok trip was way different from last year's but in a good way. I did miss shopping and buying loads of clothes and having mango sticky rice & pad thai for every single meal BUT nothing beats the fish farm adventure, JJ market, floating market, river cruise, thong lo food, copious amount of fried fish *winks*, decent Thai massage and most importantly family bonding and fun with Ed and Ed's dad. Really appreciate their awesome hospitality and time & effort.

Till then Bangkok, I'll be there... probs next year? annual BK trips sound pretty good doesn't it?
