A Filipino Affair @ Gerry's Grill

Heyo! Apologies for the lack of update. I'm not dead, just dormant and lazy :P Thank God for this Filipino meal @ Gerry's Grill as it served as a catalyst, kickstarting the whole food blogging rhythm.

Gerry's Grill @ Cuppage Road

Highly recommended by my Filipino colleague, we decided to head over to Gerry's Grill for his farewell dinner. Gerry's Grill is pretty impressive, with more than 40 outlets in Philippines and 3 outlets in the US, it's no wonder any Pinoy would have known or heard of Gerry's Grill. Serving tasty grilled and BBQ-ed poultry & seafood, Gerry's Grill was packed even on a weekday night!

K did most of the ordering as the menu appeared pretty foreign and boy were we glad K's there. The food came promptly, one after another, with the Pork Sisig taking the lead. I'm not a great fan of pork but these sizzling hot shreds of pork were darn good. Topped with an egg yolk, the pork was succulent and really flavorful; it had a nice crunch to it almost as if bacon bits were added to the shreds of pork meat.

Pork Sisig @ $10.95

Next, the Beef Kare Kare which is a Beef Stew witha  peanut base, I thought this dish was pretty unique but would have liked a stronger peanut taste. I found the stew tasting more like a pumpkin soup than a peanut stew. There were generous portions of veggies and beef parts and was a great dish, on the whole.

Beef Kare Kare $15.45

K ordered a pork soup which is a sour soup native to the Philippines. I thought the soup was ok only, I like how its tangy yet tasty but I found it way to salty for my liking. In addition, the chunky pieces of pork fat really put me off. Nonethless, this brought back really good memories of me bailing on my boring macaroni soup and stealing my maid's Fish Sinagang. My maid used to cook Filipino food for herself while obeying my mum's orders of servings subpar Mee Sua, Tang Hoon or Kway Teow Soup. Besides Sinagang, she would cook this really awesome green bean chicken & bittergourd stew which is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I'm dying to find this dish, any idea where I can have this? if you say Philippines, I will smack you real hard, you might just land up there...

Sinigang Na Baboy $9.95
The star of the night would have to be the grilled squid. I'm not too sure whether $14.95 is ex for an entire piece of squid but I'm willing to eat these over and over again! The squid was succulent and tender, with nice hints of smokiness & sweetness to it. K was teaching us how to savour the squid by dunking them into a calamansi cum Chilli Padi sauce- D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S~

Inihaw na Pusit @ $14.95

I guess the meal ended on a sweet note, despite the fact that we were bidding K goodbye. The Halo Halo, which is a popular FIlipino dessert, was to die for! It's sort of a Pinoy's version of our Ice Kachang but way sweeter and cooler. Imagine loads of tapioca, Nata De Coco, beans, jackfruit, sweet potato, crushed ice sweetened with creamy evaporated milk and topped with yam ice cream & a small slice of Leche Flan- doesn't that sound like a party in your mouth or wat!?! I love the combination of Yam ice cream and the other flavours.. kinda exuding the whole tropical vibe somehow or rather.
Halo Halo @ $4.45

I would definitely come back to Gerry's Grill, if not for the Squid, for the Halo Halo at least. I thought the prices were slightly on the ex side but the service, ambience and quality of food really deserves multiple visits. Although, do be warned, you might smell like a BBQ chicken after dining in there.
