Aroy Dee with BITC Babes

After weeks and weeks of Facebook pm-ing, it was finally time to put the plans into action. Unfortunately, Malcolm, Ash and Shin couldn't make it and hence it was down to Jools, Leny, Khim and myself. Thanks to the suggestion of a particularly wise one :), we found ourselves seated outside Aroy Dee. It seemed really hot and stuffy inside, thus we were seated outside along the corridors.

The waitress was really friendly and delivered our drinks promptly. The lemongrass drink was way better than the one I drank at Jai Thai. Although it was way too sweet for my liking, the lemongrass taste was much stronger. After allowing the ice to melt for a bit, the drink tasted really refreshing and served as an awesome thirst quencher. The Roselle drink tasted exactly like Ribena and I felt it was a waste of my money.

The food came pretty promptly too (I reckon we were way too early for dinner), with the papaya salad taking the lead. It was my virgin experience and I'm definitely very much unfit to judge but may I just say, "the papaya salad is awesome!" Great balance of flavor from the tart raw papaya slices, honey and fish sauce... YUMS! Definitely gonna be a must order item the next time I hit a Thai Restaurant.

The Pad Thai came soon after and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Ever since my last Bangkok trip, I've been yearning to source for a good Thai restaurant in Singapore which can deliver an authentic Pad Thai dish. Unfortunately, Aroy Dee isn't one of them. Aroy Dee's Pad Thai was way too dry, with clumps of noodles sticking to one another. I also thought the noodles were way too sour and didn't quite taste like the balanced and flavourful Pad Thai we had in Thailand.

Next up, the Tom Yum Soup. I found the Tom Yum Soup really tasty albeit a little too salty for my liking.

Last but not least, the Green Curry. This tasty really really good! and the closest to what I had in Thailand albeit I do prefer Singapore's rendition of Thai Green Curry. I might be wrong but I realised most of the Thai Green Curry served in Singapore are creamier with a thicker stew liked consistency. I do like my curry thick, especially when I'm eating the dish with a plateful of hot steamy olive rice. However, as Pad Thai was my carbs that day, I prefer much love the soupy consistency of the green curry and was very happy slurping spoonfuls of it. Aroy Dee's green curry chicken was packed with chicken, beans and egg plants and it was definitely the star of that night's dinner, as everybody nodded at its perfection.

Aroy Dee had some hits and misses. In addition, their menu was pretty limited: they didn't serve olive rice nor pineapple rice nor pandan chicken. When questioned, the waitress mentioned they were not allowed to do any heavy duty frying and would be serving more dishes when they move to their new outlet, a couple of blocks down. I shall definitely head back when they've shifted to their new outlet. Hopefully by then, they would have nailed some popular Thai dishes and have me coming back for more. Till then, ขอบคุณค่ะ for reading!
