Located at 151 Bishan Street 11, Chang Thai whips up pretty decent Thai fare. Pad thai is a must whenever I'm having Thai food! Chang Thai serves a pretty good portion size for $6. I thought the Pad Thai was not too bad, not overly sour nor sweet but slightly bland for me to crown this my no. 1 choice.
We also ordered their fried Kang Kong which was really tasty. I like how it has the Wok Hei taste lingering upon every bite. Albeit for $6, I would have expected slightly more though or maybe cos I couldn't get enough of it.
Chang Thai's best dish would have to be their green curry! It was thick, rich and super aromatic. Theres a choice of beef and chicken; we picked the former and it was really tender yet still has a chew to it. My mum was saying it got a lil jelak after awhile but I guess if you're a huge green curry fan like me, jelak is not in the dictionary.
It's kinda silly to order white rice when you have such a wide variation of rice to choose from, hence we chose the olive rice instead. The olive rice came with pieces of lard which definitely made me feel kinda grossed out. Nonetheless, I tried it and it was uber peperry, way way way too peppery. So much so, my dad had to eat the Pad Thai while I struggled with the rice (I have better heat tolerance). Apart from being super peppery, the rice wasn't flavourful and really just tasted like pepper rice.
Mum wanted Tom Yum soup and so we ordered their clear version. The Tom Yum was whatever a Tom Yum was supoose to taste- sour, spicy and super shiok I'm not really a Tom Yum connoisseur but I guess if I were to compare this with Bali Thai's, Chang Thai's Tom Yum fared way better.
Verdict:
Food: More hits than misses. Would definitely recommend the Green Curry.
Ambience: Decent, we had the outdoor seats but was blessed with relatively good weather.
Value: Not too bad, majority of the portions were decent
Service: Their service is impeccable! Food came promptly and staff were very polite. One of the owners was asking for feedback and when I told him about the Olive Rice he was really apologetic and seemed as though h would really take my feedback into consideration. Then again, I would have to order the Olive rice once again in order to test this theory
One thing which I feel they should change is their no water served policy. I never seemed to understand why restaurants in Singapore would charge for water when tap water/ filtered water can be used for drinking. I mean, just serve us freaking tap water! If we really wanted a drink we would still buy a drink nonetheless. Whether or not water is served is un correlated to the purchase of drinks man...just sayin~
