Johor Bahru Digs

In case you're wondering what to eat at JB...

Check out some awesome BBQ food at Meldrum walk (the street behind Wong Ah Fook). Its essentially a lane filled with push cart stalls, offering dishes from ban mian to fried oyster. Unfortunately, these stalls only get cracking around 6.30 and are pretty much unsheltered. I thought the BBQ Stingray was one of the best Ive tasted, best part.. it's much cheaper than Singapore. You can check out the BBQ Chicken Wings, Ladies inger, Fish, Squid etc.

They also have quite a huge variety of mango desserts. We were adventurous and tried out their mango "dumplings" which tasted really weird. It's sorta like a cross breed btw a kueh and a aga aga and was filled with durian pulp. I thought the mango flavour didn't really come across and quite frankly, the whole thing tasted super weird.

If you aren't digging street food, you could always head to Korean Restaurants along Pelangi. I personally love Nam Moon. I've tried Shik Gaek and another Korean place (somewhere in the vicinity but I forgot its name) albeit Nam Moon still reigns. :D

They have a wide variety of Banchan and prices are pretty decent.

The kim chi soup is flavourful and not too sour. Packed with quite a generous portion of toufu, cabbage and pork, this alone could fill 4 pax's tummy.

The Kimchi Pancake is really yummy too! I dislike Kim Chi but would go for this pancake anytime. It's not too oily and is crispy on the outside yet soft and chewy inside.

The rice cake in Nam Moon is good too! All my colleagues loved it. However, if I were to pick my favourite, it would still be Togi's at Mosque Street.

The Jap chae wasn't too bad either- can't really comment much as I'm not a Jap chae fan.

If you aint a Korean food lover but still seeking something fiery, check out Kam Long Restaurant's Curry Fish Head. There's ALWAYS a queue and many raved about it. I personally think the curry fish head is so so and not really worth the queue but hey! try it yourself! Just remember to bring loads of tissue and its sweltering in there.

JB has their share of desserts as well. My favourite hide out would have to be U desserts near The Store. They have a wide variety of desserts and are not for the indecisive peeps.

Im really impressed by most of the flavour combi they have (albeit they have some weird ones too though). If you're a durian lover, you gotta check out their durian desserts!

Durian with black glutinous rice, pomelo, sago and durian pulp
Durian with mango, pomelo, sago and durian pulp
Durian with pomelo, durian pulp and vanilla ice cream

The Mango pudding was ok, tasted pretty much like the rest e.g. Honeymoon dessert, Hui Lau Shan, Ah Chew Dessert etc.

Oh just look at how gorgeous their black sesame cum peanut paste is! Unfortunately, it's alil too sweet and not as great as the one at Old Airport Road.

And if you do not have a sweet tooth, you can grab some chicken wings from the stall opp. These babies are tasty and convenient to munch on, best part it's RM1 per stick.

My other favourite dessert place would have to be Chocolate Ice Kachang at Medan Selera Tepian Tebrau. Gerai Ayong makes some kick ass Chocolate sauced Ice Kachang.

The chocolate sauce is gooey and sticky and aint that sweet, who would have thought chocolate sauce and ice could be that complementing.

If Ice Kachang aint your jam, you can have their ice jelly, rojak or even their range of bbq-ed items. I havent tried their bbq but it sure looks like a crowd pleaser (judging from how packed his stall is during meal times).

Now what if you're at Pelangi and just want something cooling and sweet instantaneously... check out Adham @ Md. Zain, its a mobile stall located really near the Maybank at Pelang. It aint the best chendol but it would suffice for a quick fix.

Besides the above, I've also tried Ah Piaw Wanton Mee,  Kedai Makanan Mee Hoon Kueh at 56 Jalan Sutera, Taman Sentosa, duck from Ya Wang, Tai Hong Lei Cha at 42 Jalan Kuning, Taman Pelangi.. These amongst the top few choices of eateries, do check them out too!
