Baker and Cook @ Greenwood

Baker and Cook, located at 77 Hillcrest Road is the epitome of neighborhood cafe chilling. Surrounded by landed properties after landed properties, it is indeed a hassle to get a parking lot.

I love the whole layout of Baker and Cook, with cakes and tarts displayed behind see through chillers and breads and quiches displayed out in the open- a very open concept indeed.

Ice Latte @ $6+ and Lemon Tart @ $5

I ordered a pancake stack and it was passable; I kinda feel like slapping myself for wasting $17 on a eggs, flour and water. I requested for the sauce to be served separately and I know that might have caused it to look even more pathetic but taste wise it was rather forgettable. Despite the fluffy pancakes, the apple compote tasted just like chunky apple sauce & both toffee and greek yoghurt tasted like store bought ones. Dang! I should have gotten some quiche instead.. :(

Pancake Stack @ $17
I also had the carrot cake which was deemed to be one of the better ones in Singapore. Honestly, it was a let down; but that might be due to personal preference. I, for one, like m carrot cake frosting to be a frosting and not a icing. Baker and cook's version is alot like the one I had at Kith's cafe, composing of 10% cream cheese, 30% butter and a whole lot of sugar. The texture of the cake was ok, kinda leaning towards the drier coarser end of the cake crumb spectrum. And boy! is this the smallest piece of carrot cake I've seen; granted its $4.50 but still?!

Carrot Cake @ $4.50

The only thing I enjoyed out of the lot was my nice warm cuppa mocha. I love the intensity of the coffee, not too sweet yet chocolately.

My cuppa Mocha for $4+
Jie had the Salmon Tartine which had way too hard toast. I love artisan breads but this toast is a jaw breaker. Nonetheless, it was hilarious looking at Jie conquering the piece of slice with all her jaw's might.

Salmon Tartine @ $13

We ordered a lemon tart too which was way too tart for both of us. I love the crust but wouldn't pay $5 again for such a small tart.

Honestly, I was more impress with Baker and Cook's ambience and dining experience than the food itself; which is indeed a shame. I might return to Baker and Cook but this time not for any of the above items.. hopefully twice the charm...or was it thrice?
