Going Merry with BITC Babes

Glad we were all free to head out for a meal after class, Jools suggested heading over to the restaurant her friend was working in- The Merry Men. Located at Robertson Quay, The Merry Men is one of those chillax places along the Singapore River. We arrived at like 5.30 and were the first diners they had for dinner.

The Merry Men

Jools recommended the Har Cheong Chicken and Truffle Fries for starters. The Har Cheong Chicken was crispy but oily. Despite having the flavours of a prawny chicken, I thought it was rather passable.

The truffle fries had this really strong pungent taste to it. According to Jools, that's the "earthy" taste truffle oil embodies, so I guess these would be a hit for those of you who are into truffle tasting fries? I, however, love the mayo that came with the fries, aw-so rich and tangy.

On a separate note well not exactly much separated, most truffle oil do not come from truffles *Gasp*. Truffle oils are actually synthetic product that combines thioether aka 2,4-dithiapentance (so reminding me of organic chem in JC), one of the aromas found in real truffles, with an olive oil/ grapeseed oil base.

Leny and Jools had the Blackforest Mojito, which is a mixture of Rum, Blackberry, Blueberry and Raspberry. I sorta regretted not ordering these as it tasted so darn refreshing and delicious!

Not wanting to follow the crowd, I decided to try the Ice Blended Bloomer, which tasted exactly like a lychee martini. I thought it was average and would have preferred the Blackforest Mojito, hands down.

Leny had the Bangers and Mash, comprising of 2 juicy sausages with a pile of mash and couple of onion rings. I had a piece of sausage and I thought it was really smoky and delectable albeit fatty. The mash was so-so.

Jools had her all time favourite- Lamb Shank, which unfortunately turned out to be a huge disappointment. Her Lamb Shank wasn't well executed at all and did not "fall" right out of the bone upon ripping it with the fork. She did complain and got a new piece which was likewise tough. I guess it just wasn't her day; the lamb they bought was a Arnold Schwarzenegger lamb.

Khim and myself shared a salmon pizza which boast a crispy thin crust and had tons of salmon on it! I loved how they tried "healthifying" the dish by adding tons of spinach on top but it was kinda difficult eating it together with the pizza. In case you'r wondering, this pizza is about 10-11 inch and this picture does it no justice.

I guess The Merry Men was pretty average and the company that day definitely outshone the almost forgettable food. Nonetheless, I would return, one fine day, for the roast duck pizza and a nice cool refreshing jug of Blackforest Mojito.
