Went Wah Lok for lunch last week and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would have been. Honestly, the only time I eat chinese food is when my mum cooks or when I'm in Msia or.... maybe dim sum (sudden crave because of Liusha bao). Anyway my point being, I seldom eat chinese food as I don't really see a point of eating chinese food outside of the comforts of my mum's awesome cooking.
Left Clockwise: Fried fish, Fried rice, Tofu & spinach, Prawn Combi and Wintermelon soup |
The initial plan was to have Dim Sum but Wah Lok was in the midst of renovating and moved to the ballroom, thus no dim sum for us that day :( In any case, we stayed and order the set meal. The starters was a prawny combinatiion of mayo covered prawn and some fried prawn fritters thingy. Despite not being a big fan of mayo, I found this dish really good. Next up, winter melon soup! THis is one kick-ass soup! It was super flavourful and sweet. I guess my mummy's right! The Cantonese knows their soup. The veggie was next: Tofu with spinach. This is a really typical dish in chinese restaurants and it was good in an average way, if you know what I mean.
Fried fish and fish skin was the next item. If you know me well enough, you'll know I hate fried stuff but... I ate this anyway and boy was it delicious. Despite being fried, it wasn't as oily as I imagined it to be and the fish was super crispy. Nice crisp on the outside with soft luscious fish meat in the inside- Naise. Last but not least, the rice. I thought the rice was really fragrant and had the wok hei taste but I found it alil too salty after my first few bites. All set meals end with a dessert (best part of chinese cuisine) and ours was red bean cream. The red bean cream was extremely smooth but a tad too sweet.
I was uber stuffed after the rice and could barely finish the dessert. All in all, Wah Lok is better than expected and I wouldn't mind bringing my grdma there for dim sum next time :)
