Affordable Jai Thai @ Purvis Street

It's been a while since I've caught up with SZ, I blame her for spending too much time playing "chess" (inside joke). We met for dinner at Jai Thai as I had sudden cravings for Thai and it's near SZ's work place.

Upon entering, we were greeted by this really nice and pretty Thai Lady who showed us to our seats and handed us the menu. As I did not want to pay $0.30 for water, I ordered a cup of Lemongrass drink while SZ got herself a Thai Milk Tea. I liked how the Lemongrass drink came with no sugar, as I got to control the level of sweetness. However, I thought the drink lacked in flavour; I would have preferred more Lemongrass essence. SZ's Milk Tea also fell short, we both agreed it tasted more like Teh Bing than Thai Milk Tea.

After my recent Bangkok trip, Pad Thai became a must order whenever I'm having Thai cuisine. Jai Thai's Pad Thai wasn't as fabulous as the one I had at Bangkok (duh.. who am I kidding), however it was close enough. I thought the noodles had the right texture and the right level balance of sweet, sour and salty; albeit a little too heavy on the fish sauce.

Since I havent had Thai Hor Fun before, plus SZ is ok with Hor Fun (she's one hella fussy eater), we ordered the Beef Hor Fun to share. I found the Hor Fun way too salty for my liking. The Hor Fun tasted like any other Hor Fun you would get from a Tse Char Stall, however I must applaud them for their generous portion of beef slices.

SZ wanted to try their Pandan Chicken and so we got ourselves a piece of Pandan Chicken each. The Pandan Chicken looked really tasty, all wrapped up in the pandan leaf. Unfortunately, the Pandan Chicken did not deliver, it was super dry and tough, I think my pop's dentures would have been stuck to the chicken if she were to bite it. For $2 each, this Pandan Chicken was a huge disappointment.

2 slices of Pandan Chicken @ $4
Another must order would be the Mango Sticky Rice. I attributed my 2kg weight gain from Bangkok to the countless Mango Sticky Rice I had during the trip. Jai Thai's Mango Sticky Rice was no where close to any of those I had at Bangkok as the rice was way too mushy and salty. I appreciated the fact that they warmed up the rice and topped it with some mungs beans but the coconut milk was too watery resulting in a lump of tasteless goo.

Mango Sticky Rice @ $4.50
Jai Thai had some hits and misses however for the price and the lovely service, I wouldn't mind going back again. This time I would have myself a big plate of Pad Thai :)
